Y’all, I’ve really been struggling lately. I am stuck so far down in the “Between Adventures Slump.”
It’s been nearly six months since our trip to Iceland and I’m over a month out from my next trip. I have been working so hard at my full time job, which I absolutely love, but it’s hard to see photos of the travel bloggers I network off on their excursions. I start to feel jealous. And sometimes I even start to resent the fact that I am working a full time job and not leading a nomadic lifestyle. Which is not right. At all. I love my job, and I love knowing that I am dedicating my career to preserving and protecting our coastlines and natural resources. I know I wouldn’t be happy leading a purely nomadic life with no roots. But you know what they say, “the grass is always greener on the other side.”
I have been trying to be more conscious and mindful of these thoughts and feelings when they creep in. And when they do, I intentionally work them away.
Here are some ways I combat “the Slump” in my everyday life. I hope this helps any of you who struggle with this in your daily lives!
1. Plan for the next adventure!
This one is obvious. I always have to have at least one adventure on the horizon, and right now I have two! When I start to feel that wanderlusty itch and jealousy, I focus my attention on planning for these trips. It turns the negative feelings into positive ones of excitement.
In 32 days I’ll be flying to New Orleans for work to attend the Restore America’s Estuaries Summit. I’m extremely excited since it will be my first time in New Orleans, but realistically I will not be able to do as much sightseeing as I would like because it is a work trip and that is my priority. I did arrange my flights to allow for maximum personal sightseeing time, so I am thankful for that opportunity. I also get to go on a super cool field session trip, a boat tour of the floating marshes and tour of the Bayou Coquille Trail of Jean Lafitte National Park and Preserve!
Then in 48 days Matt and I will be on our way to Canada for a Banff ski trip and New Year! I’ve been doing lots of planning for this trip and getting more and more excited as each day passes.
2. Break free from routine!
I think people are innately addicted to routine.
Wake up. Work. Coffee. Lunch. Home. Dinner. Family time.
That’s my life. Five. Days. A. Week.
It sounds terribly boring, but I do love it. Regardless, there are days when I just feel like my entire being is longing for something more and I zone out at my desk staring at pictures of hikers in the Himalayas over my coffee. It happens. When it does, it’s good to break the routine.
Take a different route to work. Try out a new restaurant for dinner. Take an early day at work. Just do something different and change it up!
3. Take a day trip!
Take a day trip to somewhere new. I live in the greater Houston area, so I am lucky to have a huge number of places I want to visit within an area of my home. I’d like to go to all the museums in Houston, have a zoo day, wander aimlessly around the downtown area, and most of all, I want to visit the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir.
These are all great little cures to my wanderlust that will hold me over until the next big adventure.
4. Be a tourist in your own town!
A few weeks ago, I took an afternoon off of work and just went on an adventure around the town I live in with a good friend of mine. We got snowcones, hammocked on the beach, and took advantage of free admission at Pleasure Pier and rode the ferris wheel a few times. One weekend, Moody Gardens (a local zoo/aquarium type of attraction) was having an appreciation day for local residents, so we got free admission.
Sometimes it’s fun to act like a tourist for the day and explore your town beyond your home!
5. Reminisce and be thankful for your past adventures!
I am so thankful to have spent the 25 years of my life exploring the globe. I’ve made so many great memories and have so many good stories to tell. Sometimes it’s enough for me to just look at pictures or our honeymoon video and reflect on my favorite trips.
